Compounding

In true apothecary form, we practice the art of compounding.

Compounding is the formulation of medications and remedies based on patient specific factors, such as weight, age, taste preference, and preferred dosage form. Compounding is fundamental to pharmacy, and was the standard means of drug preparation before mass production by drug manufacturers. At one time, many of our current drug manufacturers started out as individual compounders.

Compounding is typically required when:

  • A dose is required for a specific individual
  • A drug is not available in dosage forms like transdermal gels, “chewies”, or lollipops
  • A patient suffers from allergies or reactions to excipients like dyes, sugar, lactose, or gluten
  • A combination of medications is required for easier administration and better compliance
  • No commercially available product exists for a medication

Providing compounding services allows us to give patients the attention many other stores don’t offer. Compounding takes time, training, and expertise. Most pharmacists are trained in basic compounding skills, but many have not utilized or improved these skills since. Our pharmacists use these skills on a daily basis and frequently attend hands-on continuing education programs about the art.

Our pharmacy is working towards accreditation. This means we will undergo a rigorous review of our practices to ensure compliance with the highest of standards.

We are affiliated with Professional Compounding Centers of America (PCCA), a national organization committed to advancing the practice of compounding pharmacies. Most of our raw drug materials come from another national, reputable group, Medisca.
